Encoders notes:


1. Frame type comparisons

The encodes comparisons are based on the most dominant frame type. This release has a global average (all episodes) of 77.156% p-frames. Certain episodes from the old release (http://hdbits.org/details.php?id=10381) also have a p-frame majority. For each episode, a brief statistics table will be presented (both from the old and the new release) in order to justify the frame types used for that episode-specific comparison.


2. Hybrid

Special Edition version, while superior to the original version in approximately 98.3% of frames from all episodes, had some broken scenes. Suspicion points to an improperly set debanding filter for sky/water. As a result those scenes were replaced with their original version counterparts:

Episode 03: replaced 3309 frames -> 4.485%
Epsiode 07: replaced 688 frames -> 0.938%
Episode 09: replaced 3795 frames -> 5.156%
Episode 11: replaced 5975 frames -> 8.132%

3. Discs: Special Edition vs. Original

There are only a few "raw" full resolution screenshots, easily identifiable by the ffdshow OSD info. All others were taken from avi lossless transcodes obtained from the source with spline36resize to 720p from which the actual x264 encode was made. DSS + FFdshow has horrible frame accuracy and navigation for comparison is also much slower.
Regarding concerns about frame type match for the screenshots taken from the lossless transcodes: when ffdshow was used it indicated all frames to be P except for the ones at scene changes which were I. Actually at some scene change points only the original discs have I frames, the Special Edition continues to have P frames and still looks superior. The following screenshots were not taken at scene change points.
