Bộ phim lấy bối cảnh là một thế giới thần thoại của người Viking và loài rồng. Câu chuyện xoay quanh cậu bé Hiccup, sống tại đảo Berk. Khi Hiccup được tham gia vào khóa huấn luyện rồng với những cậu bé cùng trang lứa, cậu coi đây là cơ hội để chứng minh rằng mình đã trưởng thành và là một chiến binh thật sự. Cậu đã giải thoát và kết bạn với một chú rồng và đặt chú tên Toothless. Mối quan hệ này đã thay đổi hoàn toàn cuộc sống của cậu khi cậu đấu tranh để thuyết phục cả bộ tộc mình rằng việc giết rồng là không cần thiết.
Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) is a Norse teenager from the island of Berk, where fighting dragons is a way of life. His progressive views and weird sense of humor make him a misfit, despite the fact that his father (Gerard Butler) is chief of the clan. Tossed into dragon-fighting school, he endeavors to prove himself as a true Viking, but when he befriends an injured dragon he names Toothless, he has the chance to plot a new course for his people's future.
